The Five Dysfunctions of a Book

This is a business book written by Patrick Lencioni in 2002

It is a book that analyzes the failure of organizational amalgamations such as political organizations and teams. This book involves a fictitious company called DecisdionTech which is made up of 150 workers and located in the US industrial areas, the Silicon Valley. Jeff Shanley, the first Chief Executive Officer of the company ensures that the company is equipped with high level labor force. He also ensures that it accesses the best technological systems in the market and is endowed with the most financial resources in their industry. However, despite all these the company is face with many challenges that make it unable to catch up with its competitors.

The board decides to replace the CEO, Mr. Shanley with Kathryn Peterson who affects many changes in the management. The new CEO goes ahead to analyze the personality traits of each and every member and notes a number of shortcomings. First, she noted that the company labor force lacked commitment in their operations. She noted that the members always created ambiguity in their decision making. She noted that the group lacked accountability. She noted that they did not take responsibility in decision making or whenever something went wrong, but blamed their colleagues which lead to compromised standards of production. There was mistrust among the group members with each being unwilling to expose their weaknesses to pave way for assistance. Egos were also a big setback, as each member worked as an individual to improve their personal abilities and successes. She also noted that the members had a fear of conflict.

They hid each other’s faults by debates which only ensured artificial and false harmony

After turning the company around by helping other members to overcome the above pitfalls, there was an improvement in their decision-making and more coordination as opposed to gearing for selfish interests. This helped the company improve its ratings in the corporate world.
