Autobiography: Alphonse Turner Jr Essay Sample

Personality Analysis →

In everyone’s mind, there are always some great times, experiences and events. Childhood happens to be one those numerous life episodes. Many people believed that childhood forms one of the joyful events in ones’ life; however others tend to disagree with that.  I clearly agree that this stage forms one off the key pillars in an adult’s life. Initially, during childhood, every dream and aspiration seems achievable. Also, at this stage an individual possesses massive imagination which allows one to discover, invent and find out a lot of the fun circumstances.

My name is Alphonse Turner Jr, I am married to the former Roberta I Thompson of Chadbourn, NC; we have five children and two grandchildren. My Christian pilgrimage experience began in New Orleans, LA.  I was raised in a Christian home has a child I attended James Chapel Baptist Church with my grandparents. I joined the military in 1973 and became idle in Christian service and stewardship and remained idle for nearly ten years. After completing a tour in Germany and returning to Fayetteville my relationship with Christ was rekindled.

In 1987, my wife met an elderly couple in 1987 who turned out to be our mentors in the gospel; the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Johnson. We were invited to their church, Grace Pentecostal Holiness Church in Fayetteville where we later attached.  We attended Grace faithfully and committed to the ministry.  I was baptized in September 24, 1987. One evening during the summer of 1988, the day I do not remember, I was on my way home from work and I had a life changing meet with God. A felling came over me that overwhelmed me I did not know what was happening, it was a great felling I cannot explain, I spoke under the control of this great overwhelming, I realized then I was being filled with the Spirit of God as many said would happen. After continuing to serve at Grace, I was entrusted with the Young Adults Sunday School Class and in January of 1992 I was ordained a Deacon at Grace.

Having being brought up in a family of Roman Catholic, I had the opportunity of believing in God at that early stage of life. During those days we used to attend St. Nicholas Cathedral in the outcast of the city. At one time in my life, I remained dormant on issue concerning religion. This was the duration when my parents’ hade gone for further studies overseas. One of the most memorable experiences in my childhood was my sisters wedding ceremony in the year 2002.

In 1995, I went on official duty to Schweinfurt, Germany. During that time I was attending to the service at Post chapel. The military chapels were regulated and offered time spans for different (faith) services and at the time there was not a Baptist service. We choose to attend a service called True Saints Church of God in Christ. At True Saints my wife served as a Church Mother and I was accepted as an already ordained Deacon in good standing. We continued our service with True Saints working with the Christian education department teaching Sunday school. We served for nearly three and a half years until a promotion caused us to be transferred to Hanau, Germany in 1999. In Hanau we joined New Birth Church and served in the same capacity as in True Saints, we remained at New Birth Church until March 2000.

I believe the Lord was preparing me during my service at home and abroad for pastoral ship. I continued my service by encouraging and assisting Living Word Church until we felt the spirit of God moving us to start our own ministry.  I did not know how to start a ministry or where to begin neither did I know what to do or how to do it. Going off of faith and trust in God alone we committed to starting a ministry with our children and a few charter members, New Covenant Full Gospel Baptist Church opened its doors at the Prince Charles Hotel on Hay Street, in downtown Fayetteville on 8 March 2001.

After completing our tour in Germany we moved one last time and were assigned back to Fayetteville after serving both the military and ministry in Germany. When we returned to the states we wanted to become more personally involved in ministry due to the fact I was nearing retirement from the military.

My personal commitment to ministry began many years before, but we were not able to do as much as we wanted to do. Upon retirement in 2000 my wife and I decided to give our full time to Christ. Upon returning from Germany we began our personal inward soul searching as to what direction God wanted us to take with our time. We wanted to make a personal contribution to our generation. During our flight home from Germany we were inspired by God to start a ministry, I cannot explain my calling to pastor it was an inspiration, a moving within that led me in this direction.

My personal goal is to become fully equipped to pastor and equip others through a formal theological education; this is a major part of becoming fully equipped.  I have reached a dilemma in ministry, I feel inadequate and untrained to teach and preach the gospel due to the lack of a formal theological education. I want to be creditable when I stand before Gods people to preach or teach his word.

In 2006 New Covenant Baptist Church added a new pastor’ study and a fellowship hall, the fellowship hall was dedicated to the honor and memory of the late Deacon Paul Stephens, named “Stephens Fellowship Hall”.  We were still yet without a baptismal and through Gods blessings in 2007 we added a baptismal and two new rooms nearly 600 square feet allowing us to baptize, conduct classes and hold meetings.
Our ministry objectives are; to be a place of Worship, Service, Growth and Fellowship. We seek to fulfill the great commission of Jesus Christ. We proposed to fulfill Christ’ commission through preaching, teaching, witnessing and ministry outreach programs.  Our goals are both local and global. Our local goal is commit the gospel to faithful people who are a part of New Covenant who have been properly equipped and empowered to preach, teach and make disciples. We look to help one discover their calling, then build and equip (faithful) men and women in their gift, finally have them exercise that gift for the building of the kingdom.

We seek to build a Spirit filled, multicultural Church that welcomes all people. We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, we accept as Gods infallible guide in matters pertaining to salvation, doctrine and Kingdom living. Our global ministry objective is to be connected with a larger established like-minded global ministry to partner with and support to fulfill our global objectives which is the same as our local. We are a ministry of preaching and teaching the "Full Gospel".

Currently I attend Shaw University majoring in business and scheduled to graduate in May 2008. The reason for considering was after much prayer and Gods leading. I discussed the plans with my wife and several other divinity school graduates and everyone supported. I fully believe after visiting is the place to fill this spiritual theological void in my walk with Christ and help me to better know Him. Further I wanted to attend a quality divinity school close because of the church. I was familiar with Campbell, I had taken some courses before retirement on Fort Bragg and at main campus and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I am confident that the kind of quality education along with the holistic approach to learning is what I am seeking; this is why I am considering Campbell.
