Cultural heritage is more than historical data; it contains human values that are passed from one generation to another one. Dante’s Divine Comedy is a masterpiece of medieval literature, so reflects beliefs of that epoch, not all of each are the same today. Yet, in 2012 people are still interested in global questions such as God existence, love, the correlation of the good and the evil, and whether there is eternity after death. So, this poem is relevant nowadays because it presents a holistic model of universe, which enables people to think about finding their own answers to these questions.

First of all, The Divine Comedy is a literary work apparently it was a moral guide to its contemporaries too. It gave them understanding about the laws of God and managed their expectations about what might happen to people after death. It also gave hope that good deed would be rewarded, while sins would be punished. It is true that the classification of sins that Dante provides does not fully match our epoch because it included a lot of medieval beliefs that are not relevant now. For example, he puts to his Hell whole groups of people such as, for instance, homosexuals and all non-Christians, too. Yet, we cannot ignore the fact that today’s people are in desperate need of guidance because life is fast and complicated today, so it is a challenging task to find a system of values, which would enable one to find peace of mind in our epoch. In this sense, the Divine Comedy is a model of such system, it cannot give a ready-made solution but it helps one start thinking in that direction.

Overall, in today’s epoch of consumerism and material values, The Divine Comedy is a reminder about the spiritual world, which has true value. Only understanding of this can make people truly happy and harmonious nowadays.
