A talk about modern life threatening condition and obesity will surely pop up in most people’s mind. Some consider it a lifestyle condition resulting from unhealthy eating, while others see it as a condition of the century, with lack of body exercise being its main cause. Unlike the past, where the condition was associated with adults, children as young as 3 years have been found to suffer from the condition. This makes obesity a major threat to the development and healthy living. One is considered obese if he/she has a Body Mass Index of more than 30 units. Excess amount of body fat may lead to increased health problems such as cancer and heart diseases. This may reduce the life expectancy of one’s life. Obesity occurs in three main classes depending on the BMI of a person. It is usually brought about by excess intake of energetic foods and lack of bodily exercise. Obesity is also acquired through genetic inheritance in the family set up.
Obesity has become a major problem in the modern societies all over the world. The USA and Australia set aside billions of dollars to deal with obesity every year. Australia’s obese budget of 2005 was $ 20 billion. The sector also received government subsidies amounting $ 34 billion. Further studies have indicated that obesity has been caused by drastic changes in people’s lifestyles (Wexler 13). The type of food taken has also been a major contributor to the increased obesity cases.
Obesity leads to various health problems. These problems are brought about by excessive body weight, and fat accumulation. The various diseases associated with obesity are osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, cancer, reproductive dysfunction, and work disability. Most of these chronic diseases may be prevented if obesity is controlled at an early stage (Layton 64-70). The life expectancy of obese people is low due to the various ailments that it is associated with.
The problem with obese people is that they tend to take more energetic foods than they need. The energy in the food is not well utilized within the body, hence, leading to low energy expenditure. The energy imbalance present in the body causes obesity over a given period of time.
The genes present in an organism’s body can influence the amount of fat in that organism, its storage and circulation. The genes are also the determinants of how the organisms turn food into energy. The genes determine the means under which excessive calories are used up during exercises or trainings. Overweight in many people around the world has been caused by lack of physical exercises and movements (Freedman 105). The current lifestyles have contributed to the gain in weight of many people. Technological changes have led to many people becoming idle. Developments in automobile, TV, remote controls, video games and computers have caused reduction in physical activities among the population, hence, leading to many overweight cases.
Inheritance of the disease by family members is also another major concern. This occurs when one or both parents are obese. Their children are at a higher risk of becoming obese. This situation may be brought about by inheritance of the genes (Healey 22). The intake of high energy foods and lack of physical activities also lead to obesity among family members.
Age is another cause of obesity. When people get older, they become less active. It becomes very hard for them to prevent obesity if they have been consuming foods containing a lot of calories. Their age also hinders them from participating in physical exercises or in training activities. Mental disturbances are another risk factor that leads to obesity. People who are emotionally disturbed tend to eat more in order to relieve themselves from anger or boredom (Wexler 78).
There are various health problems associated with obesity. Obesity is a body condition that is hazardous to an individual’s health. Obesity brings with it many health risks, therefore, reducing the life expectancy of people diagnosed with it. People with obesity are likely to suffer from type 2 diabetes which reduces the ability of the organism to check the level of blood sugar. Excess weight also leads to diseases of the gall bladder (Healey 69). Cancer, a leading killer disease may be caused by obesity. Cancers of esophagus, breast, endometrium and kidney are linked with obesity.
Obese people have high chances of developing high blood pressure. High blood pressure leads to the development of stroke and heart diseases (Wexler 87). Statistics have shown that stroke and heart related diseases are the leading reasons of disability and mortality of people in the U.S.A. High cholesterol levels in the blood lead to reduction and clogging of arteries, therefore, increasing the chances of heart related ailments.
Other health related risks are gout, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis. Gout is a disease that affects joints and is caused by excess amount of uric acid in blood. The increase in body weight increases the risk of getting gout (Freedman 21-25). Obesity is also associated with sleep apnea which is a serious breathing condition. It causes heavy snore and breathing may stop for a short while during sleep. Finally, osteoarthritis affects the back, knee and the hip. Carrying of extra body weight exerts pressure on the joints and affects the cartilages as well.
Solution to the Problems
The population at large needs to take time and make better choices on the food they take. People should avoid excessive use of refined carbohydrates and stop using unhealthy food. Advice on better diets should be taken from nutritionists in order to avoid energy imbalance in the body. Proper diet also includes a wide variety of vegetables and raw fruit (Stern and Kazaks 53-55). Exercises such as walking and other body practices should be taken seriously in order to control the body weight.
Obesity is widely caused by the various lifestyles and dieting patterns of the population. If obesity is unchecked, it leads to various health risks which may cause death. These health risks include cardiovascular diseases, cancer and stroke. Obesity can be checked through proper dieting and body exercises. People should avoid using food containing a lot of calories. The use of vegetables and raw fruit is highly advisable in order to balance body weight.
