Future of Nursing
As the American nation looked forward to make necessary reforms to he health care sector so as to address the high growth rate of increase in number of Americans who are in insured and provision of affordable high quality care for the aging population, there is a uncommon on way to provide the required information guidance and insight on the role of future nurses in healthcare provision an delivery of nursing services. The nursing profession required a fundamental transformation change. The institute of medicine, IOM collaborated with Robert wood Johnson and formed a committee that would establish a most important transformation initiative on the future of nursing through conducting a key study on the future of nursing and coming up with a report about the nursing issue. The committee examined the ability of the nursing force to meet the demand of the reforms it present on the public health and healthcare systems. The committee aimed at providing strong national recommendations that would ensure that delivery of the nursing service was efficient in the shortage hit nursing environment and the ability of the nursing education to be effective (Linda, A. et al,2006).
Based on the committee had a clear cut agenda that stipulated the actions recommending changes to be implemented on the institutional and public policies at local state and national levels. The committee aimed at providing recommendations that would address a range of changes in the system such as the ways to solve shortage of nurses in the United States. The committee’s recommendations had the goal of identifying key roles for nurses in the process of improving the implementation of a better efficient and effective health care system. Nurses are the front line providers of the nation’s health care services and are the largest proportion of the health care workforce. They are necessary in the provision of the quality health care, as they are the most likely lot to identify medical errors. The future of health care services relies heavily on the future of nursing. To ensure that implementations of the report recommendations succeed it is critical that the nurse’s workforce is provide with adequate numbers of skilled competent labor force so as to meet future and present medical needs (David S, et at, 2009).
The initiative carried out by Robert wood in collaboration with IOM was carried out within the IOM offices. The initiative involved gathering and collection of information the presentation of agreed report and summaries of he regional forums within the first thirteen months of the two year initiative process. Two policy or technical workshops and three regional forums aimed at providing input to the study. The report formed the basis of communication between the IOM and Robert wood. At the end of the two year initiative program the IOM and Robert wood sponsored a national conference that addressed issues raised in the report. Among the target audience in the conference were professional societies-nursing and others, policy makers, advocacy organizations and government leaders at local and state levels. Education institutions licensing bodies, education researchers, and individuals who were interested in the nursing profession were also present. The initiative report had the following recommendations of the report included implementation of nurse’s residency programs, ensuring that nurses are engaged in life long learning, nurses are prepared and are enabled to lead changes to advance health, removal of scope of practice barriers, increase the proportion of nurses to 80% by 2020, double the number of nurses with doctorates by 2020 and ensuring the expansion of opportunities for nurses to lead the improvement efforts (Peter, B. et al, 2009).
The report presented by the committee was very important in coming up with the mentioned recommendation as they formed an action oriented blue print that would lead for better nursing future. The rationale behind the purpose of the campaign for action is to provide guidance for the implementation of the recommendations provided by the report. The state based coalitions are carrying forward the implementation of the recommendations. Twelve new coalitions have been formed by the future for nursing to ensure that each American citizen has access to patient centered healthcare service providers that high quality services with nurses being the spear headers of this initiative. Some of the state based coalitions include California, Dakota, Vermont, Alabama, Nevada, Iowa, Tennessee and Arizona (Marion, J2011).
The California action coalition, for example, has a mission of advancing nurses education in California. Its core values are improving the healthcare outcomes engage broad and diverse perspectives, increasing and using influence, strategic use of resources efficiently. Currently the California action coalition is working under the initiative plan of collaborative work with and partnering with the nurses education together with the health care work force to form strong infrastructures in California to aid in the implementation of the future nurses recommendations. The nursing education collaborative model that is under development currently along with AB1295 implementation provides an opportunity of for progressing of associate degree to baccalaureate degree. The state of California has been divided in to eight regions due to its vast geographical area to allow the establishment of a local structure that will ensure the interventions are successfully implemented. The coalition has found one region n that will raise the awareness and promote the coalition’s motive in meeting the need of the healthcare system (Peter, B et al, 2009).
